Charles Taze Russell (1852-1916) was the Watchtower organization’s founder.

There is a peculiar piece of history about Russell that is not very well known to the average person, or for that matter to the greater community of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Paster Russell married Maria Ackley in March of 1879. Three months later the Russells began publication of the journal known today as The Watchtower. In 1884 the Watchtower organization was incorporated. In its original Charter the Russells are listed as two of seven members of the Board of Directors. Charles and Maria were officers in the corporation, respectively as President and Secretary Treasurer.

In 1897 Maria left Charles. A few years later the couple was divorced. But for 18 years the two were married and lived under the same roof. According to court documents and Watchtower sources, over that period of time the Russells did not have sex even once.

This is how Charles Russell described his sexual preference in the pages of The Watchtower journal:[1]

Pastor Russell’s peculiar sexual preference—for a married man in particular—is associated with a teaching by Watchtower that as perfectly created the first man (Adam) was sexless.[2]

Peculiar beliefs can turn a teacher into a strange bedfellow, and sometimes into an estranged bedfellow.
