In 1973 Watchtower published an article in its Awake! journal that asked Jehovah’s Witnesses to reconsider playing the game known as Chess.[1]
A need for caution was expressed because, according to Watchtower, 1) Chess pits minds of players with a result of stirring competition and 2) because of what Watchtower termed “the game’s military connotations”.
The article concluded by suggesting to “grown-ups” that it may be inconsistent to play Chess yet tell children they should not play with war toys or games of a military nature.
The Irony?
In 1956 Watchtower associated Chess with the wisdom of obtaining a copy of Awake! magazine.[2]
